Winchester City Museum was one of the earliest purpose built Museums outside London. Many interesting items of local interest are on display. A recent addition is
the Roman `Venta´ Gallery. Many important archaeological finds are on view. There are also period shop interiors taken from shops in the High Street, a family run Tobacconists shop and a Chemists. Open:

One of the two remaining gates to the City. The room above the gateway is now a museum. There are good views form the roof and displays include a fine painted
ceiling from Winchester College, weaponry, and weights and measures. Some interesting graffiti left by prisoners once held above the gate may be seen. The construction of the fortified gate is also of

The former home of Winchester Museums Service was converted in 1980 from a Barn and Malt house that once formed part of the outbuildings of Hyde House, now
demolished. The Archaeological archives together with the sites and monuments records for the district, plus a collection of old photographs are now held at the Discovery Center in Jewry Street
